How it works, step by step
Four short guides. Leaving and finding happen on your phone; hunts can be designed on a computer and are always played on foot.
On your phone
Leave a memory
A memory is a few lines and up to six photos, sealed at a place.
Open the Drop tab
Tap the quill. The map opens on where you are standing.
Write it
Say what happened here. Add photos from your camera or library; their hidden location data is removed.
Choose the place
Keep the pin where you stand, or drag it anywhere in the world.
Choose who can find it
One person (even someone not on the app yet), a group, or anyone who passes by.
Seal it
Tap “Seal it and leave it here.” From now on it opens only within 30 metres.
On your phone, outdoors
Find a memory
Memories meant for you, and public ones nearby, appear on the sonar as sealed blips.
Open the app
Home shows what is waiting for you and how far away it is. The app looks only while it is open.
Pick a memory to follow
Within a mile, the sonar shows its bearing and distance. Farther away, you see roughly where it is.
Walk
The ping quickens as you get closer. Within 100 metres, the blip jumps to the exact spot.
Arrive
Inside 30 metres the ring turns to gold and the button wakes up.
Break the seal
Read it where it was written. It stays in your journal, with the date you found it.
At your computer
Create a hunt on the web
Design a hunt with a big screen and a keyboard, then send everyone the link.
Sign in at trackingmemories.com
Use the same account as the app.
Start a hunt and pick a mode
Classic, treasure hunt, timed race, story trail, photo challenge, memory match or team hunt.
Plant the spots
Click the map to place each spot, then write its clue, the hidden message, and a chapter or prize if the mode needs one.
Set the rules
Drag spots into order, choose whether the next spot is hidden until players are near, add teams or a time limit, and pick a theme.
Invite players
Share the link or the eight-letter code. You will see who accepted.
Start, watch, end
Start the hunt, follow the live leaderboard, approve photo proofs, and end it to award the trophies.
On your phone, outdoors
Play a hunt
Hunts live in the Games tab. Each spot opens exactly like a memory: at 30 metres.
Accept the invitation
From a link, a code or an in-app invite. Joining records the time you reach each spot.
Read the clue
The clue tells you where to go. In some hunts the next spot stays off the sonar until you are close.
Follow the sonar
Walk to the spot. The sonar guides you the last stretch.
Break the seal
The spot reveals its message, chapter or prize. Photo challenges ask for a picture as proof.
Climb the board
See your place on the leaderboard. Trophies land on your world map when the hunt ends.
