Tracking Memories lets you leave words and photos at real places for others to find. This page explains what we keep, what we never keep, and why.
1. Your location
The app does not track you. The GPS position belongs to a memory, not to the person carrying the phone.
- Your position is used only while the app is open on your screen. There is no background location, ever.
- When the app asks what is nearby, or whether you are close enough to open a memory, your position is used to answer that request and then discarded. It is not stored, and it is removed from our request logs.
- We keep no record of where you were when you opened a memory.
- Far from a memory, the app receives only an approximate location for it (about 110 metres); the exact spot is shown only within 100 metres.
2. Memories and photos
A memory is the text and photos you write, pinned to a place you choose. We store it so the people you chose can find it.
- Nobody but you can read a memory or see its photos before standing within 30 metres of it.
- Location and other hidden data (EXIF) are removed from every photo twice: on your phone before upload, and again on our server.
- Photos are checked automatically before they are kept. Pornographic images are refused and deleted.
- When you delete a memory, its photos are deleted with it.
3. Your journal and world map
- When you find someone else’s memory, your journal records the date you found it. Only the date, never the time or your route.
- Your world map is visible only to you. You can switch the journal off in Settings and wipe it at any time.
4. Games and hunts
- Joining a hunt is your choice. When you accept, the time you reach each spot is recorded, because races and leaderboards need it.
- Moderators see which spot each player has reached and when. They never see anyone’s position.
- Photo challenge proofs are seen by the hunt’s moderator.
5. Your account and contacts
- We keep your email address, display name, username, and optional bio and avatar.
- Inviting from your contacts opens a picker. We read only the contact you choose and never upload your address book.
- Notifications never contain the text of a memory or a place.
6. Content settings and safety
- Everyone starts with Normal content. Explicit content (adult language and mature themes) is an opt-in for adults, recorded with the date you agreed.
- Reports you send are reviewed by moderators. Blocking someone hides you from each other.
7. This website
trackingmemories.com runs no analytics or advertising and sets no cookies for visitors. Fonts and images are served from our own domain. If you sign in to design hunts, a single secure cookie keeps you signed in.
8. Questions and deletion
A contact address and the full process for deleting your account will be published here before launch.
