Common questions
Opening and answering
I got an email with a code.
Someone left you a memory and typed your email address. Keep the email. Once you have the app, sign up, then open the link in the email, or tap “Got a memory code?” and enter the 8-character code. Each code works once. Then walk to the place: the memory opens within 30 metres.
I can’t open a memory.
It opens only within 30 metres of its spot. Walk closer and follow the sonar.
A memory says it opens on a later day.
The person who left it chose a day. Until then it stays sealed, even when you stand at the spot. You get a notification on the day it can be opened.
The sonar doesn’t move.
Check that location is allowed for Tracking Memories in your phone’s settings, while using the app.
Why can’t I answer a memory from home?
You answer a memory at its spot, the same way you open it. Go back within 30 metres and you can answer it.
Who sees my answer?
Only the person who left the memory. You can change your answer or remove it, and they can remove it too.
How do I see answers to my memories?
In Album, a memory you left shows how many answers it has. Open it and tap “See answers”. New answers also show under the bell at the top of the app.
When do I hear about answers?
Once a day, in the evening where you live. One notification tells you who answered, or how many answers came in. It never says what they wrote. To read them, open the memory in Album and tap “See answers”.
What is the welcome memory?
In your first minutes on the app, a memory from the Tracking Memories team appears about 60 metres from you, so you can try opening one. If you can’t reach it, tap “Can’t get there? Move it”. If you skip it, it won’t come back.
Voice notes, walls and reminders
Why can’t I add a voice note or video?
They can be added to a memory for one person. In the Drop tab, pick a friend under “Which friend?”, then tap “Record a voice note” or “Record a video”.
Can I send a voice note to a group?
No. Voice notes and videos are only for a memory left for one person. A memory for a group or for anyone can hold words and photos.
What is a shared wall?
A wall stays at one place, like a guestbook. Whoever starts it picks how close people need to be: 30, 100 or 250 metres. Within that distance anyone can read it and add their own memory. From farther away, people see only its name, cover and who started it. The person who started it can remove anything on it or delete the wall.
What is “On this day”?
On the date you opened a memory, in later years, the app can remind you of it. It uses only your journal, so if “Keep my journey” is off there is nothing to remind you of. The notification has its own switch in Settings, under Notifications.
What does the bell at the top of the app count?
New alerts since you last opened Activity on this phone, such as answers to your memories and friend requests. Tap the bell to see them. Activity keeps your alerts from the last 30 days.
Alerts, lock screen and widget
Can the app tell me when I’m near a memory?
Yes, if you turn on “Tell me when I’m near a memory” in Settings. You get a notification when you come within a mile of a memory left for you or your group, or within 200 m of a place in Achievements, even when the app is closed. Your phone does the check itself. You get at most 3 a day, and none during quiet hours.
Why does my lock screen show a distance?
On iPhone, while you walk the last 100 metres to the memory you follow, your lock screen shows how far it is. It never shows who left it or what it says. To turn it off, go to Settings › Lock screen and switch off “Distance on the lock screen”.
What does the widget show?
On iPhone, the Tracking Memories widget shows how many memories are waiting near you and when the app last checked. It never shows who left them, what they say or where they are. The app updates it while it is open.
Account and safety
How do I delete my account?
In the app, go to Settings › Delete account. On the website, go to Profile & friends › Delete account. It happens immediately.
Someone left something inappropriate.
